8And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, 9 according to the custom of the priest's of fice, his lot was to burn in cense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10And the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of incense.
"And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Za charias : for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisa beth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14And thou shalt have joy and gladness ; and many shall rejoice at his birth. "For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
5—25.
16And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 1JAnd he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the dis obedient to the wisdom of the
just ; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
lsAnd Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this ? for I am an old man, and my wife well strick en in years. 19And the angel answering, said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God ; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. 20And behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. 22And when he came out, he could not speak unto them : and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple : for he beckoned unto them, and remained speech less. 23And it came to pass,

THE ANGEL APPEARING UNTO ST. MARY
LuJce i. 26—38.
26 And in the sixth month * the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Ga lilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin espoused to a man, whose name was Joseph, of the house of David ; and the vir gin's name was Mary. 2S And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, tJwu that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of saluta tion this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary : for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt con ceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his

MARY VISITING ELISABETH
Luke i.
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill- country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40and entered in to the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass that when Elisabeth heard the sa lutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb : and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. ^And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salu tation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45And blessed is she that believed : for there shall be a performance of those
39—56.
things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden : for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things ; and holy is his name. 50And his mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm : he hath scat tered the proud in the imagi nation of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53He hath filled the hungry with good things ; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He

THE BIRTH OF THE BAPTIST
57 Now Elisabeth's full time came, that she should be de livered : and she brought forth a son. 58And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her ; and they rejoiced with her.
59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62And they made signs to his father how he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they mar velled all. 64And his mouth was opened immediately, and

his tongue loosed, and he spake and praised God. 65And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill- country of Judea. 66And all they that had heard them, laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What manner of child shall this be ! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, say ing, 68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his peo ple. 69And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, in the house of his servant David ; 7° as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71 that we should be saved from our enemies*

THE ANGEL APPEARING TO JOSEPH
Matt. i. 18—25.
18ZsTow the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise : When as his mother Mary was es poused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not will ing to make her a public ex ample, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, be hold, the angel of the Lord

THE CITY OF DAVID
Luke ii.
aAnd it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Cassar Au gustus, that all the world should be taxed. 2And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. 3And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 4And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem ; (because

he was of the house and lineage of David,) 5to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 6And so it was, that while they were there, the days were accom plished that she should be delivered. 7And she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger ; because there was no room for them in the innf .

ALMS, PRAYER, AND FASTING
Matt. vi.
1 Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
2 Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the syna gogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
3 But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
4 that thine alms may be in secret : and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are : for they love to pray standing in the syna gogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their re ward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. n Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil : For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. 14 For if ye for give men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also for give you : ls but if ye forgive not men their trespasses, nei ther will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Are ye not much better than they? 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? 28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin : 29 and yet I say unto you, That even Solo mon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, 0 ye of little faith ? 31 There fore take no thought, saying.
