TERMINAL INDEX
FOR USE WITH
McNEILL'S CODE.
The mutilation of a cipher ivord takes ptace^ for the most part^ either 'with respect to its initial or terminal syllable* Inasmuch as the cipher <words are arranged in Parts L and IL of McNeilVs Code in an absolutely alphabetical order, provided the TER- MINA TION only of the ivord is affected, -very little inconvenience is experienced, buT if the COMMENCEMENT of the ivord is incorrectly transmitted much "valuable time may be lost before the precise cipher luord is located. To meet this difficulty, and assist in quickly determining the possible alternati'bes of any mutilated Tvord, the Terminal Index has been compiled. In it all the cipher <Tvords of like TERMINA- TION are grouped together, permitting of speedy reference to them in the Code itself and rapid determination of the <ivord originally sent.
Invaluable for Quickly Decipherings Hiitllated €ode Words.

PIERON'S CODE CONDENSER
50 0/q Economy without changing codes.
This Condenser can be adapted to all telegraphic codes that are numbered. It enables one to realize an economy of 50% on all cables. The use of it is most simple and it offers, besides, a check system per- mitting the user to rectify errors of transmission.
We cannot recommend this Condenser too highly to merchants who have to correspond with distant countries, — Examples.
The four following words taken out of the ABC Code 5th edition : Certifichi^ Umbrao^ Silabear^ Drilboren^ can be cabled in two words, as follows, by the Pieron's Code Condenser, Carudlotef^ Lafidsifig,
On the receipt of these two words the receiver possessing Pieron's Code Condenser will read in his ABC Code the four sentences corresponding to the words Certijichi, Umbrao^ Silabear^ Drilboren and this without changing anything in his code.
The four following words taken from Lieber's Code Aeravissem^ Aeicorum^ Basio7ierai^ Dekenwever can be translated : Bilerbilig^ Gupalrazei.
The two following words : Aeravissem^ Untbrao^ the first of which is taken from Lieber's Code and the second from the ABC Code can be transmitted with- out any confusion possible by the single word Bileroltef.
In conclusion, Pieron's Code Condenser enables one to transmit in one word two words extracted from a cyphered code or even from two different codes.
Price $7.50 per copy.
Copies will be sent for examination on request.

PUBLISHERS 83 NASSAU STREET NEW YORK CITY
PREFACE.
In the present volume the Author has endeavoured to include the technical terms and sentences required hy the Mining, Metallurgical and Civil Engineer, by the Mine Director, and by those connected with the direction or management of Mining and Smelting Companies. Particular attention has also been paid to the financial part of mining, needs of Financiers generally, negotiations for effecting the sale or purchase of mineral and other properties, as well as to the requirements of Stock Exchange transactions. Legal, Banking and General Phrases are also largely included.
The Code is alphabetically arranged, with but one exception, viz. : — ** Sundry Weights and Measures" on pages 774-775.
On pages 373 — 376, under the word " Mineral" will be found a list of the more commonly occurring Minerals ; and on pages 533 — 535, under the word *' Rock," will be found a similar list of Rocks. Both " Minerals " and " Rocks " are arranged alphabetically.
The Cipher Words have been carefully selected with a view of eliminating such as may be identical in their telegraphic signals, or otherwise liable to error in transmission. On the next and following pages will be found General Suggestions as to the use of the Code, also for securing accuracy in messages received, for the prevention of errors in transmission, and for deciphering mutilated words when such occur.
The First Part contains over forty f^our thousand Mining, Legal and General Phrases; while the Second Part includes Numerals, Measurements^ Weights and Currencies.
A Schedule embracing the phrases required when surveying or reporting upon a mineral property is also added.
Any suggestions will be most cordially received.
BEDFORD McNeill.

General Suggestions for using McNEILL'S CODE; and for the Prevention and Correction of Errors in Messages.
I.-Use of Code.
In numerous instances one or ,niore alternative readings, separated by brackets are given ; as for instance : —
Page 2. Ahdicacion, meaning " You (they) ( ) must abide by the
decision of "
It is recommended, whenever it is not within the knowledge of the Sender thai the Receiver of the message will be able from the context to discriminate as to whicli alternative is intended, that one of the cipher words given under the head of Alternative (page 32) should be employed, to render misconception impossible.
When there is any chance of doubt arising as to whether the " singular " oi the " plural " number is intended to be conveyed, one of the cipher words under tlie heading Number (page 401), or Word (pages 733 — 734), should be used. On page 734
[ ii 3
will also be fouud ciplier words for indicating that the word is employed in its ordinary sense, and is not to be translated as conveying the meajjing tliat may be attached to it in the Code.
The cipher word AufscJiluss (page 72), meaning "Blank," should invariably be employed whenever its use would be likely to obviate error. It is foiuldmost convenient to fill in the " Blanks " in a message consecutively, and immediately after the cipher word in which they are required.
Tables on pages 748 to 751, and pages 776 to 779. — The method of using these Tables is to translate the cipher word found in any of the vertical columns of ciplier words by the meaning given at the head of the same vertical column jpZits the meaning given horizontally in the final right-hand column.
Thus on page 748, Tithing is translated : " Need not pay attention to value of ore
in sight." Whilst Toddlers is translated : " Report .by cable as to value of ore in sight." Similarly, on page 776, Wotermarh is translated; " Have you received my (our)
letter dated the 1st." Whilst Waveringhj is translated : " Have received your (-•-•*s) letter dated the 1st."
It may happen that it is wished to substitute another woxd for the cipher word actually occurring ; for this purpose additional cipher words are given in the Substi- tution Tables, pages 786 to 791. These Tables also afford opportunity of making the necessary record of such substitution.
As the Code contains 45,767 cipher words, each of "which has a consecutive number, it follows that any individual number from 1 to 45,767 inclusive, is available ; but in such case one of the cipher w'ords under the heading Numeral (page 401) should be interpolated.
Attention is particularly directed to the means afforded by the Code of transmitting any consecutive number from 1 to 45,767, inclusive. When so used the initial " ciphers" on the left hand of the groups of figures is omitted, as is also the extended meaning or translation'.
Examjjle: Suppose the message to be — " Inferir rabbits verzuckt " This message. is translated thus : —
Cable. Translation of Message. Inferir = I (we) estimate the ore in sight to amount to tons and to have an approximate value
A
Rabbits = 36,450 | Verzuckt = §400,000
The complete translation of the above message " Inferir rabbits vevzuclct " reads as follows : —
■' I (we) estimate the ore in sight to amount to 36,450 tons " and to have an approximate value of §400,000."
C "i 1
Also, wlieii repoi'tlng monthly returns and costs, if it be understood between any two correspondents that the cipher words are to be translated as numbers or local currency, the greatest detail can thus be given with the minimum of expense.
Example : Suppose the local currency to be American, and the message to be — "Gangliform essencing trambusta vei'plet helgadura ascension
" bespangle recruit colunica ambuscade "
Cable. Translation of Message.
Gangliform= During the mill worked days, yield
being as follows: — Bullion , Concen- trates realized , Concentrates in process ^
of realization , Total . The work- ing expenses for the month were .
We have also spent on development work duiing the month .
Essencing = June
Trambusta = 26
Verplet = 327,600
Helgadura = The five following words are used as numerals
Ascension = 03625 = 33,625
Bespangle = 06103 = 36,103
Recruit = 37228 = 337,228
Colunica = 11256 = 311,256
Ambuscade= 01769 = 31,769
The complete translation of the above message then reads as follows : —
" During June the mill worked 26 days, yield being as
''follows : —
"Bullion 327,500
" Concentrates realized ... ,,. ... 3,625
" Concentrates in process of realization ... 6,103
Total 337,228
"The working expenses for the mouth were 311,256
" We have also spent on develoimient work
"during the month 1,769
Increased secrecy when cabling can be secured if it is mutually agreed between any two correspondents to employ the cipher words not in their actual order, but in some other and pre-arranged order. The advantage of changing this order from time to time is obvious.
II. The Prevention and Correction of Errors in Messages
Errors in telegraphic messages may be due to one of several causes ; such as want of care on the part of the sender when writing his original cipher message.
[ iv ]
Failing the employment of a typewriting macliine, Roman characters should be employed for the cipher words.
Another fruitful cause of error is owing to the fact that each individual letter of the Alphabet is telegraphically transmitted by means of a certain number of " dots " or " dashes," such " dots " or " dashes " being separated by suitable " time intervals." Hence it is j^ossible, by a slight variation on the pai-t of either the Transmitting or the Receiving Clerk, to alter considerably the word intended to be conveyed.
For example, the signals for the letter C are — . — ■ .
EN
C T E
Whilst those for the letters TEN are respectively ]
It follows, therefore, that the words " cable " and " tenable " may be so transmitted as to be not very readily distinguishable.
C ABLE
TEN
The omission of a signal, the conversion of a " dot " into a " dash," and the improj^er lengthening or shortening of the " time interval," arc responsible for many of the errors in cipher messages.
The same observations apply also to figures.
Thus the signal for the figure 1 is , , which by a variation of the time
. , , , (A O or W M or J T intervals may become < . . .
On receipt of an undecipherable word, a reference to the Morse Signals for letters and figures, with some possible substitutions (see next page), and the exercise of a little patience, will often be found sufficient to indicate the word sought after.
It being also remembered that the cipher word may not have been distinctly written in the original message, an imperfect " i " may have been read by the Transmitting Clerk as an " e," or a '• t " may have been mistaken for an " 1 " or a "b."
Most of the cable companies will coui-teously repeat undecipherable words " free of cost," or on application will make such suggestions as may lead to the correct interpretation of them.
It is strongly recommended that any one when beginning to use this Code should study it whenever occasion may serve, as by such means great facility will be gained in selecting those sentences which most nearly convey the meaning of the sender of the messaore.
